We spent the next few weeks of our trip in Norway, living on a remote island called Seiland, waaayyyy up north in Norway, near Alta. It was spectacular. The fjords, the mountains, the reindeer, the stars, and most astounding of all… the northern lights. They dance! Did you know that they dance?? The colors flutter through the sky like a fiery fox tail flipping and skipping across the star-studded sky. Sometimes they look like just a faint green haze, but we hiked up on clear nights to a spot in the mountains where there weren’t any lights, and on those few magical nights, we were graced with the light-show of a lifetime. If you ever get to see them, be sure to thank “Unski” (our Finnish friend’s nickname for the Universe) for the dazzling show!
Fun photography fact: The northern lights image above was taken with a 4-second open exposure, so that the camera could capture the light and color of the northern lights. This picture gives the effect of what is seen with the eye, but it doesn’t quite look the same, since the movement gets blurred. Some nights when we could only barely see the lights, a longer exposure (around 8 seconds) could capture lights even brighter than the picture above! But this picture best represents what it looked like for us when we were in the mountains. It’s amazing!

Loving your backpacking adventures! The photos and sites are gorgeous and I know the in-person was much better than the photos. Thank you so very much for sharing your trip.
